Well, June is over and that means we are halfway done with 2016 (yes, I figured that out all on my own!). Anyways, there hasn’t been too many *great* films so far this year, unfortunately we are seeing more and more studios holding gems until later in the year as part of award season, but there has been a lot to enjoy; also a lot to cringe and cry over. So without further ado, here is my Halfway Report for 2016.

Best Film: Hail, Caesar!

A lot of people were let down by this but I truly really enjoyed it. The cast is amazing and the period detail for 1950s Hollywood is astounding. It is hands-down my favorite Coen Brothers film and while I doubt it makes it until December as my top film (I will actually be very disappointed in 2016 if that is the case), it is the best and my favorite film I’ve seen this year.

Honorable Mentions: Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping, The Jungle Book, Money Monster

Worst Film(s): Independence Day: Resurgence, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows and Warcraft

All of these are awful and I have six months to decide which the worst of the worst is. Truly, I was cringing in my seat needing all three of these films to be over, and two of them end on hysterically awful set-ups for sequels that we will likely never see. The only redeeming quality of all three is each has at least one hilarious unintentional laugh, of which “Independence Day’s” takes the cake.

Biggest Surprise: Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping

I really liked “Hot Rod” but the trailers for The Lonely Island’s film left me unimpressed. So I went in not expecting much. What I got was the year’s best comedy and some amazingly catchy songs (I currently have two on my phone). It’s a shame this thing did so poorly at the box office, because it deserves to be seen; catch it on DVD when it comes out.

Honorable Mentions: How to Be Single, Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising

Biggest Letdown: X-Men: Apocalypse

It’s been a disappointing year for superhero films overall (“Captain America: Civil War” and “Batman v Superman” both didn’t fully deliver their big-scale promises) but “Apocalypse” was the only one that was an actual bad movie. Forget that it was a slap in the face of the X-Men and arguably the worst film of the series; it is just a bad and boring film in its own right.

Dishonorable Mentions: Keanu, The Nice Guys

There’s my rundown of the best and worst of 2016 so far. The second half of the year brings us possible superhero redemption (“Suicide Squad” and “Dr. Strange”) as well as another Star Wars movie and a trip to singing Los Angeles (“La La Land”). It should be a fun time at the movies!
